Garanti BBVA International joins the United Nations Global Compact

UNGC GBI 1

We are proud to announce that Garanti BBVA International has joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. By joining this global movement, we commit to aligning our business operations and strategies with the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact, covering human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption.

The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, bringing together over more than 160 countries with 62 country networks and over 25 000 participants to align their operations with ten universally accepted principles in human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. Launched in 2000, the UNGC serves as a framework for responsible business conduct, emphasizing ethical governance and sustainable development. By committing to these principles, participating companies integrate sustainability into their core values, ensuring long-term resilience while addressing global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and corruption. Beyond guidance for de-risking ESG related factors, the UNGC provides access to global resources, networking opportunities, and tools to help businesses measure and improve their sustainability performance, reinforcing the role of the private sector in shaping a more equitable and sustainable future.

UNGC GBI

The significance of the UNGC lies in its ability to bridge the gap between corporate ambition and societal needs, fostering accountability and sustainable growth. In today’s economy, businesses are increasingly expected to play an active role in addressing social and environmental challenges rather than solely maximizing shareholder value. Thanks to the UNGC, corporate credibility is enhanced, and operations become future-proof. Moreover, aligning with the Ten Principles contributes to the achievement of the United Nations SDGs, ensuring that businesses not only meet compliance requirements but also lead a meaningful, systemic change. As regulatory frameworks worldwide continue to tighten, being part of the UNGC helps companies navigate emerging ESG expectations, setting them apart as leaders in corporate responsibility.

In the Netherlands, the UNGC is represented by Global Compact Network Netherlands, based in The Hague. Since its establishment in 2007, and operating independently since 2023, the Dutch network has played a pivotal role in guiding companies toward sustainable business practices. Dutch businesses benefit from various UNGC initiatives. Given the Netherlands’ strong focus on sustainability and responsible business conduct, participation in the UNGC reinforces the country’s leadership in global ESG standards, helping companies transition toward a greener, more inclusive economy.

“At Garanti BBVA International, we recognize that sustainable and responsible banking is essential for long-term success and societal progress. By joining the UN Global Compact, we reaffirm our commitment to ethical business practices, environmental responsibility, green future and creating lasting value for our stakeholders.”
